Thank you very much. At least one thing seems clear.

Please note I have no problem with sound when just watching TV with
mplayer, zapping or xawtv.

I hear the sound while recoding. Is it the expected behaviour of mencoder?

The volume of the sound I hear while recording is sensitive to the
volume and line settings in xaumixer. However, the settings have no
effect on recording.

The strange thing is that the results of my experiments are not fully
consistent. Unfortunately, my experiments are rather chaotic as I
switch between xawtv, zapping and mplayer/mecoder. Perhaps the
settings in one program are inherited by others? There was a session
when I was able to record correctly on-air TV both with zapping and
mencoder. On next session I tried to record video tapes and the sound
was recorded but distorted when played back (unfortunately I have
erased the files). Now I don't have sound all the time when recording
with mencoder, zapping or xawtv. In the meantime I made no concious
changes to the configuration but perhaps (sorry, I don't remember) I
updated my unstable Debian.

I use an on-board sound card and my mainboard is ECS K7S5A. The
capture card is AverTV Studio 203.

Any new suggestions?

Best regards

Janusz
