[MPlayer-users] mencoder ignoring cmdline bitrate options?

hi there,

i've been having issues with encoding xvid movies with mencoder. it
seems like mencoder is ignoring the cmdline option that specifies the
bitrate, and i'm getting a bit frustrated. am i doing something wrong?

here's the command lines i'm using:

mencoder dvd://1 -alang en -oac copy -ofps 23.976 -ovc xvid -xvidencopts :pass=1:bitrate=1600: -vf scale=688:384 -passlogfile 1-pass1.log -o /dev/null

mencoder dvd://1 -alang en -oac copy -ofps 23.976 -ovc xvid -xvidencopts :pass =2:bitrate=1600: -vf scale=688:384 -passlogfile 1-pass1.log -o 1-incomplete.avi

and the output file:

VIDEO: [XVID] 688x384 24bpp 23.976 fps 5258.8 kbps (641.9 kbyte/s)

Software: MEncoder 1.0pre3-3.3.3
(though i had this problem with pre2 as well)

the output file is something like 4 gigs! this really sucks if you're
trying to rip onto something like a ms vfat filesystem that doesn't
support files > 2GB...

anyway, i think the problem might have something to do with the scaling,
though i can't be sure. i say this because a similar rip that i did
but with -vf scale -zoom -xy 640 ripped a properly sized file... but
windows didn't like that one (i've heard it's because the dimensions
aren't in multiples of 16 though haven't yet confirmed it)

any ideas? thanks,

	sean
