All right, but..

...doing this didnt't make any noticeable difference. It plays the
first few (ten, maybe) seconds of the audio, video is terribly slow,
and then shuts down audio altogehter, while video proceeds normally.

Also, I'm unable to play *just* the audio (-vo null), I still get only
the first part of the audio.

There's a bunch of messages, but the computer I have mplayer on isn't
networked to the one I type this on. The audio-related ones seem to
be:

| Forced audio codec: hwac3
| Opening audio dec.: [hwac3] AC3 passthrough SP/DIF
| AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2ch, 16 bit ...
| Selected audio codec: [hwac3] afm:hwac3 (AC3 thru SPDIF)
| ==================================
:
: (bunch of video related stuff)
:
| =================================
| AOL: [oss] 48kHz 2ch ac3
| Building audio filter chain 48kHz/2ch/16bit -> 48/2/8
| [Format] Sample format big endian AC3 not yet supported
| Couldn't find matching filter / ao format!
| Start playing
:

This is with rc2, latest sourceforge OSS drivers. I get the same
noise as with xine at the start of the ac3 stream, by the way.

Anything I can try?
