yes, i have exactly the same problem as Dean too... and would be glad to 
change that... why 3 frames?

mencoder "$1" -mf on:fps=25:type=png -ovc rawrgb -o /tmp/$3.avi
mencoder /tmp/$3.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts 
vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=$2:vhq:vqmin=2:vqmax=15:keyint=250:vmax_b_frames=0 
-o $3.mpeg
