Some details left out in my previous message:

I'm using mplayer 0.9.0rc4, can't build CVS at the moment becase I keep 
getting timeouts on ffmpeg's CVS.  The file is encoded with ffmpeg divx video 
at 4000kbps (it's 656x480 from a noisy source, and will be edited and 
recompressed, but anything much lower makes the initial capture look bad), 
29.97fps, and pcm audio at 44.1KHz (mp3 makes the CPU load too high).  It 
runs a little over 60 minutes.  I'll be trying the rest of today to get 
ffmpeg CVS so that I can try this with a CVS build, but so far nothing can 
fix the file.
