Cannot help you with the compilation problem, but. you said,

Have a look at ATI's site. Look for the product page and then follow the link 
to the drivers. You will find ATI's firegl driver. It uses DRI and provides 
OpenGL out of the box. Xv should also work.

If this does not help, try the Gato's driver (set it to a Radeon 8500).
