MPlayer isn't really a GUI application. GMPlayer is, but it isn't there 
by default. Regardless of how it's started, MPlayer gives you the 
version on stdout or stderr. Of course, MPLayer 0.90 calls itself 
0.90rc5 (I know this because I compiled from source), but other than 
that, it seems reliable.
