You missed my point entirely.  AAlib has a (n)curses 'driver' that has colour support.  We (or whomever wants to tackle it) would simply need to make changes to the aa-vo that "if (aadriver == curses) { use COLOR_PAIRS; }" type of thing.  Personally, I am still reading up on video coding, so I wouldn't know exactly where to begin, yet.  If I am able to learn what's needed, I am willing to take this on at some point.

(BTW, aalib even works decently in Cygwin, possibly even can be done for a native Win at some point.
