My card is Radeon8500/XFree4.3 w/ATi's close source driver. 
xvinfo shows a maximum size of 2048x2048,which looks fine.

Thank you for the tip, the default -vo is xv, which would crash mplayer.
-vo x11 works a little better, sound ok, but no video output(a blank screen).
