I believe it is interference, but I can't be sure. It happens with both 
mythtv and mencoder (and others) 

I will reccomend audacity for cleaning this up (the noise removal tool, 
select a small section, then "get noise profile" and then select all of the 
audio, and chose remove noise.)

unfortuantely we don't yet have -af denoise that fixes it magicly :(

yes, add to mplayer/mencoder  in the -tv section adevice=/dev/dspX (for me 
only the analog work, digital doesn't) and for mplayer you will need to add 
immediatemode=0 (mencoder's default)
