-vo x11 should work fine. When you tried x11, are you sure mplayer was
actually using it and not xv?

When you use x11, mplayer should print:
VO: [x11] 720x312 => 720x312 Planar YV12

Whereas with xv:
VO: [xv] 720x312 => 720x312 Planar YV12
