[MPlayer-users] compress audio dynamic range

I've got a film, encoded with very wide dynamic range... I don't have
bad speakers, but they just can't bear it - if I set volume high enough
to hear quiet sounds, the loud ones tend to scare all neighbors ;)

I want to compress audio range to something sane, I tried
-af volume=5:sc, audio became more loud, but I don't feel any
compressing effect. And I wonder if I am doing this right way, where can
I set exactly how much I want to compress audio dynamic range?

If this is impossible with mplayer, which tool can I use?
