At least for SuSE 8.1 there is another solution:

get gccold package from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/gcc/
(or similar, browse around) and install it with rpm.
Then ./configure --with-cc=/opt/gcc295/bin/gcc

Compilation is much faster then and doesn't fail :-)
