Wrong, you don't compile codecs, you need mplayer -- that knows how to use 
these binary codecs.

1. get mplayer sources from http://www.mplayerhq.hu
2. get appropiate codec packs from http://www.mplayerhq.hu
3a. mkdir /usr/lib/win32
3b. put win32 codecs in /usr/lib/win32
4. get more codecs and put them in some dir.
5. unpack the mplayer package.
6a. ./configure --help
6b. read the help you've received, especially the end.
6c. read it again, because you just scrolled it through :)
6d. look for option with which you can specify dirs where to find binary 
codecs, something like --with-win32libdir=/where did you install win32 
libraries?
7. upon successfully ran ./configure --... do make all install as root
8. run mplayer

OR

Install some quality RPMs, afaik those are available. And I don't mean the 
redhat made rpms, those might be crippled. GOOGLE. SEARCH.
