Close.

What I want is for mplayer to figure how to play the movie whos location 
is specified by a relitive (not absolute) designaton in the play list 
(geez that's wordy.)

dvd://1 would be fine, "if" mplayer knew that it should use the same 
"device" as where it found the playlist.  I have a feeling that would be 
an undesirable change (it would break a playlist stored on the HD that 
played whatever DVD was loaded in the drive) thus the "if".  OTOH, maybe

Following the "dvd://1//dev/hdd", maybe dvd://1//./ to represent 
"dvd://1//<dvd location>"
