Depends on the skills of those who dubbed it. The german versions of 
some episodes
of Buffy for example are indeed dubbed really badly.

What is a better way to improve your listening skills in a foreign 
language than watching

That's a point which is
often forgotten about. I've watched the entire Season 7 of Deep Space 
Nine in french,
just as a 'warm up' for the listening test in french ;)

How many players can actually play subtitles, but cannot handle multiple 
audio streams
in an AVI file?

Multilanguage AVI files have been allowed for more than 10 years.
The only pseudo-player under Windows which does not support it is
Windows Mediaplayer...is it really THAT bad under other OSes? Even
if it is, then you can still choose a player out of the other half...
