I found an RPM:
"xvidcore-1.0.0-0.rc2.1.fr.rpm"
at
http://yarrow.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=729
which allegedly includes libxvidcore.so.4
It is apparently for RedHat (I use SuSE), but it let me install MPlayer.
