You are correct sir. :) try -vf pp=fd on your player line and see if the
"lines" go away. If they do, its interlaced. The above command tells
mplayer to use the fd (ffmpeg's) deinterlacer to smooth things out for
you.
Interlacing is a HUGE topic. google it and you can read for hours.
