I just tried:
# mplayer -vc ffwmv1 axlroseicon.wmv
<SNIP>
....
</SNIP>

Opening audio decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg/libavcodec audio decoders
AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, 16 bit (0x10), ratio: 12005->176400 (96.0 kbit)
Selected audio codec: [ffwmav2] afm:ffmpeg (DivX audio v2 (ffmpeg))
==========================================================================
vo: X11 running at 1280x1024 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0.0" => local display)
==========================================================================
Forced video codec: ffwmv1
Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x33564D57.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/codecs.html!

So then I get the audio. I also tried with the ffwmv2 codec, which gave the same result. I just don't get the video. I also tried 'su' and then mplayer, without success.
Wasn't that what you meant with another codec?
