The main reason people I know of do it is to play games, for which
purpose A) you often want as powerful a system as you can manage and B)
you probably can't run the program under Linux anyway. There are also
some programs which may be required for one reason or another, say for
(compatibility with things used at) work - and there's a fellow I know
who does video encoding and editing who likes MPlayer/MEncoder, but uses
Windows for user-friendly video editing.
The other thing is that for someone on a budget, yes, an extra machine
*can* be that hard to come by. I sank myself fairly far into debt to get
the parts for the (comparatively far from top-of-the-line) machine I'm
running now, and money for another computer is just not available to me.
