Well, I use quite the same command:
mplayer -ao alsa1x:spdif -srate 48000 -ac hwac3, <videofile>

May be there's an incompatibility witht the AC3 steam produced an my
Yamaha amplifier...

What's the output of "iecset" on your machine ?
