Last I checked, you have to pay extra to get the MPEG-2 codec for
Quicktime, so it's no wonder that doesn't work.

That's quite strange.  Are you using an older version of QT?  MPEG4 is
the primary video codec QT uses now.

I find it odd that it would support that at all.


Perhaps it's just a case of QT not supporting these formats in an AVI
container?  First thing I would try is encoding with "-nosound" to make
sure that isn't part of the problem.  Then test all the various
video codecs once again, and see if you have better luck.

Surely, if you use "-of mpeg" with mpeg1video, and mp2 audio, any video
player on the planet should be able to play it.

If that doesn't work, the best advice I can offer is to look at MPEG4IP,
which will take the MPEG-4 video (produced by mencoder) and mux it
into a MOV container (ie. same as the .MP4 files QT produces).  There is
plenty of info on this both on mpeg4ip.sf.net, as well as in the
mplayer-users mailing-list archive.
