[MPlayer-users] encoding for quicktime

I'm having trouble recoding some clips so they can be viewed using
QuickTime. I find that mpeg1video and mpeg2video crash, mpeg4 and msmpeg4
can't be opened by QuickTime (it can't download a codec for them), and wmv2
produces buggy output.

What do most people use?

For the curious, I'm using the Homeworld trailer
<http://www.divx.com/movies/homeworld2.php> and recoding (on Windows) as
such:
mencoder HomeWorld_1024.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4 -vf
scale=640:-2 -oac copy -o HomeWorld_640.avi
