A very risky assumption. First, on my system (Exceed on a Dell 
Optiplex-GX150 with Sony CPD-420GS on NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 with AGP8X 
(as reported by W2K "Display properties"), xdpyinfo says:

screen #0:
   dimensions:    1280x1024 pixels (370x270 millimeters)
   resolution:    88x96 dots per inch

Second, its my observation that *very* few people care to calibrate the 
geometry of their monitor. When one day I captured PAL at 704x576 but 
mistakenly created video files stating pixel aspect ration 1, no one saw 
anything wrong until the TV broadcast a tuning pattern with circles and 
squares!
