[MPlayer-users] 0xfffe: ogg-in-avi or extensible wave?

I was recently given a six-track WAVE file with a TwoCC of 0xfffe, which
mplayer refuses to play:

    Playing corticalstim_-_sumito_5.1.wav.
    Audio file detected.
    ==========================================================================
    Opening audio decoder: [libvorbis] Ogg/Vorbis audio decoder
    OggVorbis: initial (identification) header broken!
    ADecoder init failed :(
    ADecoder init failed :(
    Cannot find codec for audio format 0xFFFE.
    Read DOCS/HTML/en/codecs.html!
    ==========================================================================
    Audio: no sound
    Video: no video

mplayer seems to read 0xfffe as ogg-in-avi format, but everything I've found
about 0xfffe on the web seems to indicate that this is a subtype of the
Microsoft wave format, called 'extensible wave format'.

Which is it? And perhaps more importantly, how can I coax mplayer to play
this (and future similar files) for me? I've tried '-ac pcm' to similar
failure (not surprisingly).
