[MPlayer-users] mplayer 1.0pre6 and ALSA 1.0.8 could not open audio device

When I attempt to use the -ao alsa option, I get the following error:

Checking audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/16bit ->
44100Hz/2ch/16bit...
AF_pre: af format: 2 bps, 2 ch, 44100 hz, little endian signed int
AF_pre: 44100Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound
Video: no video

I'm using the ice1724 driver with an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 sound card.
 Mplayer works fine with the -ao oss option, but I am having sync 
problems with a video so I want alsa to work.  aplay works fine.  I get
this error runing as a user or as root.

Is this a known problem with mplayer?  Do I have something
misconfigured?
