No, if you just use -oac copy in the video encoding it should maintain
sync. The frameno thing can actually cause de-sync sometimes, this is
why it is now deprecated.

I've never had any problem with sync, though I'm not usually encoding
DVDs my process is similar to yours in that I do the sound separately.
I use vorbis sound and mux into ogm or, these days, matroska. When I
do encode a DVD I tend to just copy the ac3 soundtrack.
A newer mplayer should give you better results, but if you're happy
with what you have...
