OK, but I have never succeeded in compiling mplayer/mencoder myself.
Well, I have, of course, but there is always something missing,
because I regurarly have seg fault at first try of mencoder or mplayer,
when I compile it myself...

So, why is it (almost) OK with UTF-8 ?
With the same ~/.mplayer/font, I have only one problem with
mplayer -utf8 -sub test-utf8.srt video.avi
and it is for the euro sign...

I cannot believe it is a font problem, since the same font works for 
UTF-8, and not for ISO-8859-1(5)
Did you try my test files ?

I did not find the doc of -subcp in man. Is it the same as 
--subfont-encoding ? I have of course already tried it...

I explained that I wanted my OGM being correctly played under french 
Windows systems (CP1252). And I have not found any Windows player which 
let you choose the subtitle character set. All the players I have tried 
use the default Windows character set.
And I am afraid to be limited to Matroska, since I do not use their 
codecs...
