No. Since I am using a packaged version, I thought someone might know whether
there were any relevant changes since then. I got my mplayer as a binary rpm
mplayer-1.0-44_pre7.rhfc3.at obtained from http://apt.atrpms.net/fedora/ To use
the CVS, or compile from sources, I may (haven't checked, but I had tried a few
months back) need headers I haven't installed yet, so the delay.

Will compile from sources (using latest CVS) and let you know when I do that.
That may take some time.

As I said, I did not do it. However, the rpm has an srpm with a spec file which
I will download and let you know about later. What I do know is
  (a) ldd mplayer does not mention any version of faad shared library as an
external dependency. Removing the faad shared libraries from my system has no
effect.
  (b) All the error messages that I am seeing are strings in the mplayer binary.
Since I doubt anyone would link the external faad *statically*, I assume it is
using internal faad.

This is easy.  Please access
http://tanmoy.dnsalias.org/tripod/pictures/kyocera/flix110605_1.3g2 or
http://tanmoy.dnsalias.org/tripod/pictures/kyocera/flix050205_1.3g2 for
examples. I will try to leave my machine on the net continuously this week so
that you can download these at your convenience.
