It shouldn't be. Did you compile MPlayer specifically for you CPU
or did you have runtime detection enabled while compiling?

For the record, I can play almost any movie without much
framedropping on PII Mobile 366MHz.

You seem to follow a common misconception that DivX is a file "format".
The proper name is "container" and DivX isn't one. MKV is, AVI is and
Quicktime is. DivX is a video codec. You can put video compressed with a
given codec (DivX, Intel Indeo, Sorenson, etc.) into a container. You can
put audio compressed with some other codec (or not) into a container. Not
all containers support all codecs.

I hope it's clear now.

To your question: you could try recompressing using some less CPU
intensive codec, but without knowing the original stream parameters (fps,
codecs, bitrates and dimensions) it's hard to give any recommendations.
