They use a stupid form of redirection. Try:

$ mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile bla.mov 
http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount/waroftheworlds/waroftheworlds_480.mov
...
$ mplayer bla.mov
...
File not found: 'waroftheworlds_m480.mov'
...
$ mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile bla.mov 
http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount/waroftheworlds/waroftheworlds_m480.mov

et voila.
