This wouldn't happen to be Mamoru Oshii's Avalon from "Anime Cartoon
International", would it?  That particular [unlicensed] disc was
manufactered far enough off-spec that it will not play in some 
commercial set-top players.

Anyhow.. I have that disc here, and it did play in mplayer at least 
when I last tried it, but I don't recall whether I had attempted 
any deinterlacing on it.
