I do not experience such problem on my AMD-64 machine, so I guess it's
not related to that platform. Try to use alsa's oss emulation, maybe
that would help.
Also, try to see if you don't have a sound daemon (such as arts of
esd) on your graphic environnement, I've heard of some issues with
that.
