x264 and h264 are different. x264 is trying to be a more open version  
of h264, but it's got a long way to go before it's at the level that  
h264 is at right now. h264 decoders should be able to play them.  
MPlayer might be giving you this error if x264 (the codec/library  
itself) is not installed.
