It's rather your inability to put the differnt pieces together
to form something bigger.

The problem here is, that MPlayer can do a lot of things, but
each of it is just a small piece of what you want to do.
You have to put these pieces together to form something bigger.
Yes, therefore you have to know what kind of options are
available.

And yes, the documentation lacks here a lot, but that's mostly
because there are endless posibilities to combine MPlayers
functions and we already have problems just to document all
the possible options correctly and in a way that is even
for non-specialists understandable.

So, if you have suggestions on how to improve the doc
and would like to write some of it, please join
the mplayer-docs mailinglist and give us a hand.
