Are you using -vo x11? That and -vo gl2 are AFAIK the only ones that
change the global X server settings. -vo xv should work okay - at least
unless your card drivers are crap. Add -vf eq2 to the command line and
it should work, too.
Anyway, post the full mplayer -v output if it still does not work.
