i think you have to get your kernel compiled with HPET_EMULATE_RTC,
under HPET Timer Support, under Platform options, i suppose, and RTC
configured to be compiled. (in kernel's menuconfig)

note: this is just a supposition, because i don't have an x386like
machine to test it on...
