That's the source of your problems- unaccelerated GFX can be pain
to watch videos, especially full screen- Just recently I sold my
Celeron 333 based machine, on which, thanks to GeeForce 2
I was able to successfully watch full screen, postprocessed vids.

As for ALSA, I don't think it's a problem- shouldn't be any slower 
than OSS, in fact- that's to beter hardware access, it should be less 
strain to machine.
