[MPlayer-users] dvd fails to play, works when mounted...

hi,

this is a problem a friend of mine has:

he has a video dvd that was created in a Sony RDR-HX710 DVD recorder.

it plays fine in windows xp.
it plays fine when he mounts the dvd, and then plays it using:
mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device /mnt/cdrom

but when playing it directly it fails with:

libdvdread: Could not open device with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/hdb for reading
Could't open DVD device: /dev/hdb

(full mplayer output attached)

he has a HP Compaq NX8220. he can play other dvds.

btw. the playback fails also with ogle or vlc.

he uses MPlayer 1.0pre7try2-3.4.4, on gentoo linux.

the directory structure on the dvd is:

/mnt/cdrom/video_ts/vts_03_0.bup
/mnt/cdrom/video_ts/vts_03_0.ifo
/mnt/cdrom/video_ts/vts_03_1.vob
/mnt/cdrom/video_ts/vts_04_0.bup
/mnt/cdrom/video_ts/vts_04_0.ifo
/mnt/cdrom/video_ts/vts_04_1.vob

i also attached to this mail the mplayer -v -v -v output when it works 
ok using the mounted media.

any ideas why is this happening?
