Over here, replaygain works for ogg files.

afaik replaygain is build into codec, and not all codecs support it (libmp3 
doesn't whereas libmad might)
you can simply test replaygain:
On test file, edit replaygain value to strong attenuation (say -20dB) and 
use as source for decoder test.
