That's pretty much the procedure to install MPlayer on ANY operating
system. Even Mac OS. The controls are also the exact same as the ones
covered in documentation.
And, unless we're dealing with problems in the OS, or just a
bootstrap install, the only packages you're really going to need is
X11 (possibly the Dev packages), maybe GTK (if you want the GUI).
Packages that are recommended (including the Dev packages) are LAME,
LibDVDCSS, LibDVDRead, XviD, the Essential Codec Package, and maybe
TwoLame or TooLame. LibDV is required if you plan to have anything to
do with DV, and x264 is useful, but I think you can only get it from
source.
Pretty much, you managed to do a by-the-book installation of MPlayer.
