[MPlayer-users] How do i fix playback on slow systems?

so i get the "system too slow message" on my computer when playing  
back certain HD sources.  (twin 2.7 g5, 2 gigs ram)

the A/V will desync, and the picture will go fuzzy.

i use VLC and the playback is crisp, clear, and "pretty" for the most  
part  (there is some artefacting in a couple scenes which i want to  
see if mplayer can do better at).

i would like some tips for settings which would bring the performance  
into line.
