That is a rather sure indication that MPlayer is not (directly) your
problem, and the problem is a kind of priority inversion: MPlayer is
running and blocking your CPU while for optimal playback something else
should be running - usually your X server. Try to raise the priority of
your X server. And also check which vo you are using and try some
other. Also try some other graphics card driver if you have a choice...
