For the record, I think the issue was that I had both the version of 
libx264 I installed from the git repository and also libx264-dev from 
Ubuntu Hardy.

`sudo apt-get remove libx264-dev` followed by rebuilding my local 
libx264 and mplayer/mencoder gave me an mencoder that didn't seg fault.
