Oh, and - further to earlier answers, my (working) code doesn't use directX 
video output - it uses:

- vo gl:yuv=2:slice-height=0

I'm not sure, but I seem to recall that was to solve some sort of glitching 
issue. It also uses:

-vf eq

...which seems to put the video filter architecture into an older, legacy 
mode which allows more violent swings in brightness and contrast, allowing 
you to achieve black. My code actually faded everything up from and down to 
black (by rapid changes to brightness and contrast) over the first and last 
quarter-second in any case to soften any changes in black level.
