I hope so, it used to be rock-solid, never heard any clipping at all, and made 
the really quiet bits in movies much easier to hear.  Glad it's not just
me :-)

That's a tricky question - it was definitely working December 2007, and for 
some time after that.  I would hazard a guess and say it was mid-2008 when it 
stopped working.  I checked the manpage thinking there was some option I had 
to tweak after the upgrade, and I noticed that it had new options for 
different types of volume adjustments - I'd never seen those before, so 
perhaps it broke when those new algorithms were introduced?
