Have you ever tried hitting "." while a movie plays? ... ;-)

It's actually the first hit when you search for "frame" in
man 1 mplayer:

   Step forward. Pressing once will pause movie, every consecutive
   press will play one frame and then go into pause mode again (any
   other key unpauses).
