Greetings.

The MPlayer manual says,
"For best results MPlayer should use a colorspace
that your video card supports in hardware."
The above does not imply (to me) that
"the video will not play without the filter".

I would like to try playback without any filters and see what happens.
I would really like to hear/know how to prevent MPlayer
from loading/starting video filters even if everyone else knows
that MPlayer won't "work" in that case.
So maybe someone could/would reply/advise
how to prevent MPlayer from loading/starting video filters ... ?

The laptop from 1998 in question is a Toshiba 4005cds.

The 4005 now has 160mb RAM & a WD2500BEVE HDD.
I use the 800x600 display in 16bit (not 24bit ...)
I might try all this again at 24bit later ...

I prefer to open the avi files from the contextmenu
and put whatever specs into the config file.

The MP output says,
"Your system is too SLOW to play this!"
This conclusion is INCORRECT.
VLC will play this exact same file
over and over all night with no problems.
VLC plays this type of avi file (320:240/507kbps/23.976or25)
at around 50% CPU usage on the 4005.

I currently have 2 sets of avi files to play on the 4005.
1) The 320:240/507kbps/23.976or25 files
that I now make (with aviSynth in VirtualDub -
Divx codec, fast recompress, multipass, progressive/non-interlaced)
2) dozens and dozens (and dozens ...) of files that I made
years and years (and years ...) ago when I had just started
doing digital video & converted the first part of my VHS collection.
I made those files at 352:240/501/29.97.
I didn't know then what I know now about making avi files ...
I didn't know anything about progessive or interlaced.
The DivX codec was set to progressive, but
I also checked the "Enable audio/video interleaving" option.
So I guess these group2 videos are some kind
of interlaced/progressive hybrid?

VLC can/will not play those group2 files
from start to finish without CPU usage
(at some unknown time for some unknown reason)
going to 100% and the output locking up.

The
1) Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vf scale...;
says further
"convertering from yuv420p to yuyv422 with MMX ..."

The colorspace list from the -vf format=fmt=help command
on the 4005 does not list yuyv422 ..

#Available formats:
444p16le 444p16be 422p16le 422p16be 420p16le 420p16be 444p16
422p16 420p16 420a 444p 422p 411p 440p yuy2 uyvy yvu9 if09 yv12
i420 iyuv clpl hm12 y800 y8 nv12 nv21 bgr24 bgr32 bgr16 bgr15 bgr12
bgr8 bgr4 bg4b bgr1 rgb48be rgb48le rgb48ne rgb24 rgb32 rgb16 rgb15
rgb12 rgb8 rgb4 rg4b rgb1 rgba argb bgra abgr mjpeg mjpg

I don't know how to convert from the console message colorspace
to the Available formats colorspaces ... which one is yuyv422?

In any case I have have found some config file settings
that will allow MPlayer to play either set of avi files
from start to finish without the 100%CPU lockup problem.

I tried (almost) all the MPlayer "workarounds".
I found that the autosync suggestion seemed to make a difference.
I don't know why, however.
Using autosync throws off the a/v sync,
so I added delay=-.5;
autosync=30 was too low, so I use
autosync=50 on group2 files and
autosync=40 on group1 files.

I also use on both groups
ac=mad
dr=1
framedrop=1
(hardframedrop causes too much distortion)
fs=1
ontop=0

and on group1 files
noaspect=1

and on group2 files
aspect=4:3
fps=23.976
ni=1
vf=scale=320:-2,crop=320:240

I would not use the vf=scale=320:-2,crop=320:240
when I would run MPlayer with any video filters ...
I might be a be able to use fps=25 instead of 23.976

I would like to try playback without any filters and see what happens.
I would really like to hear/know how to prevent MPlayer
from loading/starting video filters even if everyone else knows
that MPlayer won't "work" in that case.
So maybe someone could/would reply/advise
how to prevent MPlayer from loading/starting video filters ... ?

Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
Thank you.

Please provide full, uncut output of MPlayer (and command line).
(Info about the GPU of your "multimedia" laptop may also help.)

Thema: [MPlayer-users] MPlayer on OLD XP Laptop \\ 29Jun10

29June2010

Greetings.

I have just discovered & started playing around
with the MPlayer commandline/config file.
I have three XP laptops.
Laptop G has an Intel Celeron M370 1500MHz & 1gb DDR2 266MHz RAM.
Laptop I has a PIV 1800MHz & 1gb DDR 133MHz RAM.
S/MPlayer is my preferred video gui/player on my XP laptops G & I.

I want XP laptop T (from 1998 has a PII 233MHz with 160mb RAM)
to be my multimedia machine.
I play A/V files on T while I work on G & I.
(I wish my USB analog video device would run on T ...)
VLC works better than S/MP on T.
VLC will play very well any/all avi files I have made IF
the dimensions are 320:240;
the bitrate is not too high &
the framerate is 25 or less.
S/MP will not play those (or any ) files on T.
CPU usage goes to 100% & the playback locks up.

MPlayer through the commandline does not play those files
as well as VLC on T.
The MPlayer console gives the following two messages:
1) Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vf scale...;
2) Invalid and inefficient vfw-avi packed B frames detected;

I would like to know the MPlayer commandline/config file entry
to prevent MPlayer from starting the scale filter.
It seems to me (& I have read) that MPlayer filters require
too much cpu usage on laptop T.
How can one disable and /or prevent MPlayer
from loading/starting video filters?

I ran the -vf format=fmt=help command and
have the list of supported colorspaces.
When I try the -nocolorkey command (in the config file or commandline),
the mplayer console says -nocolorkey does not exist ...

I have other questions, but the above is my first concern.

Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
Thank you.
