[MPlayer-users] VDPAU stuttering when playing x264 encoded media

Hi all

When using mplayer SVN to playback x264 encoded media using vdpau,
video playback stutters unpredictably. Usually playing 5 minutes or so
of a file is sufficient to exhibit the bug. Disabling vdpau with vc=xv
resolves all the stuttering (but obviously, no more accelerated
playback).
While it is stuttering, it is like the video frames are delayed, and
then they rush to catch up - as if it goes to 5 fps for 2 seconds,
then outputs 70 frames in a second, before going back to normal 30
fps. Sound is fine throughout all this, but occasionally it lags so
much the sound drops temporarily as well.

Switching to Üoti's mplayer git repository fixes the stuttering, but
exposes other problems, like the screen not being cleared when the
media finishes playing (the last frame is left on screen).
I'm sure I have seen reports of this on the mplayer svn branch, and
they had been fixed, so I would prefer to continue to use the official
branch of mplayer if possible.

I'm using FreeBSD 8 amd64, nvidia 195.22 and intel HDA audio over
spdif, using OSS.

The hardware is a core2 duo @ 1.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM, nvidia 8400 GS.
