[MPlayer-users] Mplayer does not display correct subtitle font

There is no problem with playing an mkv with ass subtitles, whether or
not -embeddedfonts or -noembeddedfonts option is used, if the font is
installed on the system, the subtitles display with the correct font.
However, when playing a file with simple srt subtitles and using the
-font option to select a font, (usually, Arial) Mplayer chooses a
completely different font to display.
ass=1 and embeddedfonts=1 are enabled in the mplayer.conf file
Arial is indeed installed on my system and works perfectly in all other
apps. including the version of Mplayer that was shipped with Ubuntu Lucid.
Here is some interesting -v output when subtitles are displayed:
